Fire Hydrant Testing and Maintenance

Battalion Chief Thomas Porter

In order to provide the highest level of fire protection and lower homeowner insurance rates,

our personnel manage a program to provide maintenance and testing of all fire hydrants in our

response area. BSFD maintains over 850 fire hydrants throughout the district.  We work closely

with the Greenville Water System and Greer Commission of Public Works to make sure that all

of our hydrants are in operating condition and ready when needed.

Hydrant Flow Testing

Part of our ongoing maintenance program requires our personnel to test the pressure and water

flow from each hydrant.  This process requires us to fully open the hydrant and obtain pressure

readings.  Sometimes this procedure will cause sediment that has collected in water mains to discolor

your water.  If this happens, run water from a bathtub faucet or outside faucet until the water clears.

If you have clothes in the washing machine, simply run the clothes through another wash cycle.  If the

discoloration persists, please contact us at 288-5037.

Access to Hydrants

When there is an emergency our responders need to have ready access to the nearest fire hydrant.

Therefore, we ask that residents and business owners keep all obstacles away from fire hydrants.

This includes vehicles, trees, shrubs, bushes, and decorative landscaping.  Although all fire hydrants are

located on the public right-of-way, BSFD tries to work with property owners to maintain access to

hydrants while still preserving the aesthetics of the area.  You may click the link provided to access the

form we use if we find obstructions to a hydrant.
