OUTDOOR - CONTROLLED BURNING
INFORMATION
Please contact us at (864) 288-5037 to obtain permission to conduct outdoor burning. A BSFD
representative will come to your site to ensure the following criteria from the Greenville County
Outdoor Burning Ordinance are satisfied.
Greenville County Ordinance #3201 permits outdoor burning of yard debris as long as the following restrictions are met:
The burn location is located not less than fifty (50) feet from any structure and adequate provision is made to prevent
the fire from spreading to within 50 feet of any structure.
The burning must be constantly attended by a competent person until the fire is completely extinguished.
The person must have a garden hose connected to a water supply or other extinguishing equipment ready for use.
Proper notification is given to the State Forestry Commission at (800) 986-5299.
Burning is allowed between the hours of 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. FIRES MUST BE COMPLETELY EXTINGUISHED AT 3 PM.
(Exception: Fires in connection with food preparation, campfires, and ceremonial occasions.)
HAZARDOUS/TOXIC MATERIALS SHALL NOT BE BURNED AT ANY TIME. (Ex: Plastic bags, garbage, tires, shingles, etc.)
Open burning is prohibited on all Greenville County roads/drainage rights-of-way.
Please note that burning authorized by County Ordinance does not relieve the individual conducting the burning from any
civil or criminal liabilities which may occur as a result of such burning.
Outdoor burning also contributes to air pollution in our area. Greenville County is very close to "non-attainment" regarding
the EPA Air Quality Standards for small particulates in the atmosphere created by outdoor burning and vehicle exhaust. Please
